One Piece Card Game: getting started in South Africa

The One Piece Card Game is Bandai’s trading card game based on Eiichiro Oda’s One Piece manga and anime. It has become a favourite with players who like a fast, tactical game and with collectors who chase its alternate-art and manga-art cards. This guide explains the basics, what to buy first, and how to start in South Africa.

How the game works, in short

Each player brings three things:

  • 1 Leader card. Your Leader stays on the table all game. It sets your deck’s colour (or colours) and your Life: the number printed on it says how many Life cards you start with.
  • A 50-card deck of Characters, Events and Stages. Only cards in your Leader’s colours may go in, and at most 4 copies of any card number.
  • A DON!! deck of 10 cards. DON!! cards are your resource. Each turn you add more of them, and you spend them to play cards or attach them to your Leader and Characters to make their attacks stronger.

At the start, each player puts Life cards face down from the top of their deck, as many as the Leader’s Life value. When your Leader is hit, you take a Life card into your hand (and some have a “Trigger” effect). Once you have no Life left, the next hit on your Leader wins the game for your opponent.

That is enough to play your first game. Bandai’s official website has a rule manual, a play guide and a step-by-step beginner’s tutorial for the details.

What to buy first

A starter deck

A starter deck is a complete, ready-to-play deck with a Leader, a 50-card deck and DON!! cards, built around one character or crew. Bandai’s own advice for beginners is to start with one. Two players with a starter deck each can learn the game together.

Then booster packs

Once you know which Leader you enjoy, booster packs add new cards to your deck and collection. Main sets are numbered OP-01, OP-02 and so on; a booster box holds 24 packs. Extra boosters (EB) are smaller sets that add cards for existing Leaders, and premium boosters (PRB) reprint popular cards with special finishes.

Sleeves and a deck box

Sleeve your deck before you play. Cards in sleeves shuffle more easily and keep their value. Collectors also use toploaders or binders for their best cards.

Single cards

If your deck needs one particular card, buy it as a single. Opening packs to find one card costs far more. Our One Piece singles binder has Leaders, Characters, Events and alt arts, one of each, photographed front and back.

Set codes and rarities

Every card has a code such as OP12-118: the set (OP-12) and the card’s number in it. Other prefixes: ST for starter decks, EB for extra boosters, PRB for premium boosters, P for promo cards.

Rarities printed on the cards include Common (C), Uncommon (UC), Rare (R), Super Rare (SR), Secret Rare (SEC) and Leader (L), plus special versions: alternate art (often called “alt art” or “parallel”), SP cards with special designs, and the much sought-after manga-art cards. Collectors often have these graded; our Vault has had graded One Piece cards such as a PSA 10 Jewelry Bonney manga alt art.

English and Japanese cards

Japanese sets come out first, often months before the English version. Japanese cards are popular with collectors for their print quality and earlier release. If you play in official events, check which card languages the event allows before you build with Japanese cards.

Playing in South Africa

Local game stores run One Piece Card Game events: casual nights, tournaments and prerelease events where you can try a new set early. Bandai lists official events and stores on its website and in its official app. Ask at a store near you; it is the easiest way to find players.
