Booster box vs Elite Trainer Box vs booster bundle: which Pokémon product to buy
Every new Pokémon Trading Card Game set comes in several kinds of sealed product. They all contain booster packs from the set, but in different numbers and with different extras. This guide explains the main ones, using the Mega Evolution: Delta Reign set (released 6 November 2026) as the example, because Pokémon has published its full product line-up.
The booster pack
Everything starts with the booster pack. A Delta Reign booster pack holds 10 cards and 1 Basic Energy. Which cards you get is random, which is the fun of opening packs. Every product below is, at heart, a number of these packs plus extras.
Booster box (booster display)
A booster box holds 36 booster packs and nothing else. It is the cheapest way to buy packs, per pack, and the choice of players who want many cards from one set and of collectors who want to open a lot of packs or keep a sealed box.
- Good for: opening many packs, building a collection of one set, keeping sealed.
- Not ideal for: a first purchase or a small gift; it is a large amount at once.
Shops sometimes sell a booster box case: several sealed booster boxes in the distributor’s outer box (for Delta Reign, 6 boxes).
Elite Trainer Box (ETB)
An Elite Trainer Box is a set of packs with everything a player needs around them. The Delta Reign Elite Trainer Box holds:
- 9 booster packs;
- 1 full-art foil promo card (a Kyogre for Delta Reign) that you only get in this box;
- 65 card sleeves with the set’s artwork;
- 40 Energy cards;
- damage-counter dice, a coin-flip die and a plastic coin;
- a player’s guide to the set;
- a sturdy storage box with dividers.
Per pack, an ETB costs more than a booster box, because you pay for the extras. For a new player the sleeves, Energy and dice are useful; for a collector the promo card and the box itself are often the reason to buy it. Many collectors keep one ETB of each set sealed on the shelf.
- Good for: a gift, a new player, a collector who wants the promo and the box.
- Not ideal for: getting the most packs for your money.
Pokémon Center Elite Trainer Boxes, sold through Pokémon’s own stores overseas, add two packs and a second promo. They are not the standard box sold by South African shops.
Booster bundle
A booster bundle holds 6 booster packs in a simple box, with no extras. It sits between a few loose packs and an ETB, and usually costs less per pack than an ETB.
- Good for: opening a few packs of a new set without the cost of a box; a small gift.
Blisters, sleeved boosters, tins and collection boxes
- 3-pack blister: 3 booster packs and a promo card in a plastic blister.
- Sleeved booster: one booster pack in a cardboard sleeve, so it can hang on a shop hook. The cheapest way to try a set.
- Tins and mini tins: a few booster packs and often a promo card, in a collectable metal tin.
- ex boxes, premium collections, binder and poster collections: packs plus a featured promo card, an oversize card, a figure, a binder or posters, depending on the product. Each product page lists exactly what is inside.
- Battle decks: ready-to-play 60-card decks built around one Pokémon. No booster packs to open, but you can play straight away. A good start for a new player.
Which one should you buy?
- You want to play. Start with a battle deck or an Elite Trainer Box (sleeves, Energy and dice included). Add single cards for your deck rather than opening packs hoping for one card.
- You want many cards from one set. A booster box gives you the most packs for your money.
- You are buying a gift. An Elite Trainer Box looks good and has something for everyone; a booster bundle or a tin works for a smaller budget.
- You collect sealed product. Many collectors keep an Elite Trainer Box and a booster box of each set unopened. Store it flat, out of the sun and away from damp.
- You want one particular card. Buy the single. Opening packs for one card usually costs far more than the card. See the Pokémon singles binder.
Other card games
The same idea applies to other games, with different numbers. A One Piece Card Game booster box holds 24 packs, and Bandai also sells starter decks, extra boosters and tins. Magic: The Gathering has play boosters, collector boosters, bundles and Commander decks. Each product page in our shop lists what is in the box.
